ESAT Preparation: How Long Should You Study?

2 min readAugust 2026esatpreparationstudy-plan

There is no official answer to how long ESAT preparation should take, and anyone who gives you a precise number is guessing. What you can do is reason it out from where you are starting and how the test rewards preparation.

A workable starting point

For many students, two to three months of regular work is a sensible amount. That is usually long enough to audit your content against the subject guides, rebuild weak topics, and sit a decent number of timed papers with real review in between. It is a starting point, not a rule: someone whose A-level subjects are already strong may need less, and someone with rustier content may want more.

Why consistency beats total hours

The ESAT rewards fast, accurate application under time pressure, and that is a skill you build by repetition rather than by cramming. A student doing three focused, timed sessions a week for two months will almost always be better prepared than one who does nothing until the fortnight before and then works flat out. Short and regular wins, because speed only develops with spacing.

Adjust the length to your starting point

Two things move the sensible length up or down:

  • How solid your content is. If your subject knowledge is current and strong, more of your time can go on timed practice and technique, and you need less overall. If there are real gaps, build in weeks to close them first.
  • How many modules you sit. Most candidates take three modules, each scored on its own, so your preparation has to cover all of them rather than one. More required modules means more ground to keep warm.

Work backwards from the date

The most reliable way to decide is to start from your test date and plan in reverse. For 2027 entry the main sitting is 12 to 16 October 2026, with booking closing on 28 September 2026. Fix your date, then place your full mocks in the final fortnight, your mixed timed practice in the weeks before that, and your content rebuilding at the start. For a ready-made version of this, see the ESAT revision timetable, and for the full method, how to prepare for the ESAT.

Official ESAT resources

The test and its dates are set by UAT-UK. Its pages are the authoritative source, and the tools on esat.fyi are supplementary to them.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I prepare for the ESAT?

For many students, two to three months of regular preparation is a workable starting point. The right length depends on how solid your subject knowledge already is and how much time you can give each week, so treat it as a guide rather than a rule.

Can I prepare for the ESAT in a month?

It is possible if your subject knowledge is already strong and you focus entirely on timed practice and technique, but it leaves little room to fix content gaps. Starting earlier gives you more margin.

How many hours a week should I study for the ESAT?

There is no fixed figure. A few focused, timed sessions each week, done consistently, tend to work better than occasional long stretches, because the skills you are building are speed and accurate recall.
